My Y(W): Theresa Dodson is On a Mission
“[I’ve learned] how much the YWCA staff believe and live the mission everyday and they way they give of their talents endlessly. Also, just how much the services that they YWCA provides are critically needed in Topeka.”
Theresa Dodson admits that she didn’t know much about YWCA when she first got involved through work. But it didn’t take long for her to realize just how much our mission means to the staff, volunteers, and board members who do this work together. Read on to see why Theresa is #OnAMission with YWCA Northeast Kansas.
How did you first get involved at the YWCA?
“[The] opportunity came to me through my work. I didn't know much about the organization when I joined the board.”
Who is the woman (real or fictional) you deeply admire, and what qualities or actions inspire you the most about her?
“Recently - I have been inspired by Maria Shriver. She is on a mission to educate and inspire others and does it with such subtle conviction. Here is a quote from her Sunday Paper, which I now subscribe to: "Moving humanity forward. That is my ministry. That is my mission. I hope you will join me." In addition to that, she is on a mission to end Alzheimer's Disease once and for all.”
Reflecting on your work with the YWCA, what specific achievement or impact are you most proud of?
“Hiring Kathleen Marker as CEO :)”
Beyond your commitments to the YWCA, how do you like to spend your free time or engage in activities for relaxation and joy?
“Travel, camping, reading and spending time with family.”
Is there someone within the YWCA—whether a fellow board member, volunteer, staff member, or donor—that you look up to or find particularly inspiring? Why?
“Again Kathleen Marker. She came to the YWCA during a difficult time both financially and culturally for the YWCA and she just dug right in to do whatever she needed to make the YWCA successful. She lives and breathes the mission each and every day!”
